Shahyzul Rahman

Shahyzul joined LZ Hussain & Co. in April 2023. He graduated from the London School of Economics & Political Science with a LLB in Laws. He was called to the English Bar at Middle Temple in 2010 and obtained a LLM in International Commercial Law from University College, London, in 2017.

Shahyzul maintains a general litigation and advisory practice. He has worked at the Attorney General’s Chambers as Deputy Public Prosecutor and Counsel, at the Judiciary as a Magistrate, a Registrar of the Supreme Court, and a Deputy Official Receiver, and at the law offices of Messrs Pengiran Izad & Lee as an advocate and solicitor.

As a litigator he has appeared before all levels of court in Brunei in both criminal and civil matters including the Court of Appeal. He has represented a variety of clients ranging from individuals, small businesses to large established companies and is experienced in complex trial advocacy procedures.

Shahyzul also has experience in contract drafting having drafted and negotiated IT procurement agreements, license agreements, and building contracts for the Government. He was involved in the early stages for the appointment of principal consultant and other contractors for a large infrastructure project in Brunei and drafted several key documents and agreements.

In the regulatory sphere, Shahyzul has experience in litigating and advising the Government and large multinational companies on issues relating to health and safety law, employment law and oil and gas matters.

At the policy level, Shahyzul has drafted and/or advised Government departments and the Judiciary on draft legislation on a range of matters including anti-terrorism financing and civil justice processes.

Shahyzul has also consulted for the United Nations’ Global Maritime Crime Programme. In particular, he has assisted in the development of the Prosecutors Network for Maritime Enforcement (PNME) a network for collaboration between prosecutors from Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, which provides a forum for the development of collaborative efforts and serves a training platform.
